Discovery Speaker Series: Ornithology with Alex Troutman, a Black Birder

Tune into the Estuarium’s Facebook Live or join us through Zoom on February 2nd at 6:30 PM for an introduction to ornithology, the study of birds, with Alex Troutman. Alex is a Wildlife Biologist, Black Birder, and currently obtaining his Masters in Biology from Georgia Southern University. Alex’s research focuses on the relationship between birds and insects in tidal wetlands. His talk will be about studying birds and waterfowl in general and being a black birder/natural enthusiast.

As a Black Birder he is passionate about increasing diversity in the STEM field. From being involved in Black in Marine Science and Black Birder’s Week, to leading nature hikes, Alex is out to show there are wildlife biologists who look like you. If you are interested in studying birds, especially waterfowl, as a Black, Indigenous, or other Person of Color, this is your chance to listen in and ask questions.

Young ones are invited to join in the virtual talk by following along with coloring pages related to the Discovery Speaker Series topics that will be available for download prior to the event. Coloring pages can also be picked up at the Estuarium during our weekend open hours.
