Discovery Speaker Series: Steh-Chass, The People with Charlene Krise

Tune into the Estuarium’s Facebook Live or join us through Zoom on January 5th at 6:30 PM for an exciting talk with Charlene Krise, the Director of the Squaxin Island Museum, Library, and Research Center. Join us to hear Charlene talk about Steh-Chass, the people. Charlene served as the Squaxin Island Tribe’s Tribal Council Vice-Chairman from 2017-2021 and has represented the Squaxin Tribe in historic court rulings, such as the Shellfish Litigation in 1996 (Boldt II), and the Culvert Treaty Fishing Litigation of 2006-2007. If you are interested in learning more about local tribal culture, you will not want to miss this talk! This event is part of our Discovery Speaker Series which takes place virtually each first Thursday at 6:30 PM from October through March.

The Squaxin Island Tribe is heir to the ancient name of Steh-Chass. Today, Squaxin tribal members can trace their family lineage back to the historical watershed of the Steh-Chass, known currently as Budd Inlet in Thurston County. Join us to hear more about the vibrant culture, heritage, and communities of the Steh-Chass people.

Please join us for this exciting opportunity and bring your questions!

Young ones are invited to join in the virtual talk by following along with coloring pages related to the Discovery Speaker Series topics that will be available for download prior to the event. Coloring pages can also be picked up at the Estuarium during our weekend open hours.
