Discovery Speaker Series: Sustainable Shellfish Farming with Bill Dewey

Join us for another season of Discovery Speaker Series hosted by the Puget Sound Estuarium. Every 1st Thursday of the month from October-March we invite you to tune in via Zoom or Facebook Live. Learn about current environmental research or sustainability projects from Scientists, Educators, Artists, and Earth Advocates and get your questions answered live!

We will be kicking things off on Thursday October 5th at 6:30pm with Bill Dewey, Director of Public Affairs for Taylor Shellfish Farms. After getting his degree in shellfish biology from the University of Washington in 1981, Bill has been working for Taylor Shellfish Farms, the largest producer of farmed shellfish in the United States. Bill will be talking to us about shellfish farming in Puget Sound and the ecosystem services provided by them.

Bill’s passion for sustainable shellfish farming goes beyond, with 25 years of operating his own Manila clam family farm in Samish Bay. Spending weekends and holidays out on the water waiting for the tide to recede so he can work on his clam farm. Bill’s experience and credibility has earned him the spot on many boards and committees dedicated to monitoring ecosystems and developing reasonable fish and shellfish regulations both locally and nationally. If you are interested in the impacts of aquaculture on our estuaries you’ll want to tune in!

Young ones are invited to join in the virtual talk by following along with coloring pages related to the Discovery Speaker Series topics that will be available for download prior to the event. Coloring pages can also be picked up at the Estuarium during our weekend open hours.

To watch the talk simply go to the Facebook link at 6:30pm on March 2nd and the video will be playing, you do not need to sign in to see it.
